Towing with your motorbike

Towing with your motorbike

You must have a full motorcycle licence if you want to tow a trailer behind your motorbike, and your motorbike must have an engine capacity of at least 125 cc. To find out more about towing with a motorbike, see GOV.UK.

If you want to fit a sidecar you should:

  • ask your dealer if your machine is suitable
  • make sure that, after fitting, the sidecar is fixed correctly to the mounting points
  • fix it on the left-hand side of the machine if the machine was registered on or after 1 August 1981.

You’ll need to adopt a different riding technique when riding with a sidecar. Braking and steering will be particularly affected so take extra care.
