There are two types of taxi. The main difference is that hackney carriages can be hailed on the street or wait for passengers on a taxi rank but private hire vehicles must be booked in advance. The information in this section covers both types of taxi.
The licensing requirements for taxi drivers differ from one local authority to another. Contact your local council to find out what you’ll need to do to become a taxi driver.
Use GOV.UK to find your local council.
All local councils will need you to provide
- a medical check, including an eyesight test
- a Criminal Records Bureau check
- a current driving licence
- a fee for the licence.
There may also be a driving test covering driving ability and knowledge of the local area.
