Practical test: on the day
The practical test varies slightly depending on the category of vehicle you’re driving.
For all specialist vehicles (category F, G, H or K) you’ll have an eyesight check (GOV.UK) and be tested on
- driving around left and right circuits
- turning round using forward and reverse gears
- your knowledge of The Highway Code, traffic signs and other motoring matters.
In a category H driving test you’ll also be tested on driving the vehicle backwards and using its tracks to turn it around so it’s facing the opposite direction.
On the day of your test you’ll need to bring your provisional driving licence with you and make sure the vehicle you’re going to drive during the test
- is roadworthy
- has valid vehicle tax and a current MOT certificate (if needed)
- is insured for use on the test
- has red L plates displayed on the front and back (or D plates in Wales)
- is mechanically sound and fit to be on the road.

If you pass your test
Well done! You can now get your provisional licence changed to a full licence. Your examiner will usually send your details to the DVLA so an upgraded licence can be sent to you by post. For more details about how to claim your driving test pass, see GOV.UK.
Your examiner will give you feedback on your test. Remember to listen carefully to this: just because you passed your test, it does not mean you drove perfectly!
If you fail your test
At the end of your test, the examiner will tell you if you’re passed or failed.
If you fail, you’ll be given a driving test report showing the faults you made, and your examiner will also explain to you why you have not passed. Although you’ll probably feel disappointed, listen carefully to the feedback because it will help you get things right next time.
Make the most of the time before you retake your test to talk to your instructor about what you need to work on and get as much practice as you can.
