The stopping distance is divided into two parts:
- thinking distance – the part where you recognise the need to stop and react by using the brakes
- braking distance – the part where the vehicle slows to a complete stop.
Use our interactive stopping distances game to see how average stopping distances can change with speed and weather conditions. The distances shown are a general guide and in the real world, other factors such as your attention and reaction time, road surface and the condition of your vehicle will make a difference.
For more information on stopping distances, read rule 126 of The Official Highway Code.
