The Driving Standards Agency has created the national standard for driver and rider training, which sets out the knowledge, skills and understanding you’ll need to provide a successful programme of rider training. The standard is important for making sure your pupils not only learn in a safe way, but also learn to become safe riders. In addition it makes sure you keep your skills and knowledge up to date.
Find out more about the standard in the Motorcyclist Trainer Knowledge Centre on this website.
There’s also a national standard for riders, which describes what motorbike riders need to know and be able to do to be safe and responsible on the road. This is what your pupils will be working towards as they learn to ride: if they can meet the standard, they should be a safe rider and able to pass their tests.
The Motorcyclist Knowledge Centre in this website is a guide to the national standard for riders: it explains the standard in a clear and easy-to-digest format. You could suggest your pupils take a look at the knowledge centre to help them understand what they need to learn.
On this website there are also knowledge centres for car drivers, goods vehicle drivers and passenger-carrying vehicle drivers.
