In this blog you'll discover the most difficult theory test app questions and pick up some tips for preparing for the live test.

Some of you may have tried our splendid kit app as part of your theory test revision. One of the great things about it is that it includes a whole load of practice questions alongside the study content, which makes practising for the real thing a breeze.

Lovely, you might be thinking, but is there any real point in reading a blog about something I’ve already installed on the smart device of my choice? Well, yes there is.

One of the wonders of the modern world is that we’re able to ask our data boffins to do something magical to root out the practice questions that people have difficulty answering. This helps us to work out whether the question should be phrased differently or whether it’s a ‘difficult’ topic, or both.

What we’ve learned

So, what have we discovered? Well, the most incorrectly answered question is:

  • You have stopped in an emergency area. What must you do before you rejoin the carriageway?

The second most incorrectly answered question is:

  • What must you do when you hitch an unbraked trailer to a towing vehicle?

And the third most incorrectly answered question is:

  • Where can you find reflective amber studs on a motorway?

The interesting thing about all these questions, is that they cover several aspects of the study material. For example, they’re not only about traffic signs or road markings – which just goes to show the value of revising all the study materials as thoroughly as you can.

Here are some more tips for good theory test revision:

  • Work out what kind of learner you are. Do you learn best when you’re reading, when you’re listening or when you’re doing? Spend some time deciding what works best for you – it will really help you get the most from your studies
  • Don’t skip sections of content. You need to learn each topic area thoroughly as you could be tested on any of it
  • Use the free practice tests on Safe Driving for Life to supplement your learning
  • Talk to your instructor if you’re struggling. They are there to help you prepare for your driving tests, so don’t be afraid to ask them for assistance
  • Finally, set aside regular time to study. The more consistent you are, the better your preparation will be.

Oh, and before we forget, you can also get some tip top advice on how to pass your theory test in this blog written by driving instructor, Annie Winterburn.

Answering the big questions

Well, that’s it for now – but we couldn’t go without giving you the answers to those theory test questions:

  • You have stopped in an emergency area. What must you do before you rejoin the carriageway?

Answer: Use the emergency telephone. This is because a lane may have to be closed to allow you to rejoin the carriageway safely.

  • What must you do when you hitch an unbraked trailer to a towing vehicle?

Answer: Fit a secondary coupling device. If your trailer coupling fails the secondary coupling stops the trailer running away. The trailer stays attached to the vehicle while you brake to a stop.

  • Where can you find reflective amber studs on a motorway?

Answer: On the right-hand edge of the road. Its red on the left by the hard shoulder, amber on the right by the central reservation, white between lanes and green at slip roads and lay-bys!
