ADI Knowledge Centre

ADI Knowledge Centre

The Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Knowledge Centre covers the skills, knowledge and understanding you’ll need to deliver driver training, as set out in the National driver and rider training standard.

The National driver and rider training standard has been created by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to set out what you need to be an ADI, motorbike instructor or instructor trainer.

You should also read the DVSA’s guide to the approved driving instructor register.

Standards check

You must take at least 1 standards check in each 4-year period that you’re registered as an ADI. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will write to you when your standards check is due. There is no fee.

The standards check assesses your ability to help pupils learn and improve, not the ability to identify and correct specific driving faults.

The ADI Knowledge Centre covers the following areas:

Your licence to teach

Your training vehicle

What to teach and how to teach it

Managing safety

Developing your skills, knowledge and understanding
